In celebration of Paul Auster’s birthday today, listen to him reading three poems by Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo, who is serving an 11-year prison sentence in China for “subversion of state power.” Just this past Wednesday, Auster released a statement addressed to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on behalf of jailed writers everywhere. He writes, “The freedom to speak and publish without censorship or the threat of imprisonment is a sacred right for all men and women.”
